Six 2026 AFL Grand Final Players: What the Instagram Audiences Reveals
Ahead of the 2026 AFL Grand Final, Fabulate Discovery compares six Brisbane and Fremantle player profiles to show why audience fit, engagement and content distribution matter alongside follower count.
What Discovery Data Brands About AFL Player Influence
On social, an AFL player is more than a name, a club and a follower count.
Some profiles generate Reel plays well beyond the size of their following. Others have audiences concentrated around family, fashion, travel or lifestyle as much as sport. That changes what a brand partnership can look like and who it may actually reach.
That is why the more useful question for marketers is not simply which player has the biggest profile? It is what does their social audience actually tell us?
Using Fabulate Discovery, we reviewed Instagram data available on 24 September 2026 across a working pool of players from both Brisbane and Fremantle, then selected six profiles that illustrate different audience and performance patterns.
This is not a ranking and it is not intended to represent every AFL player. It is a snapshot of how differently social influence can develop around the same sporting moment.
Follower count provides scale. But when it is read alongside content performance, audience location and category interests, a much more useful picture of creator fit starts to emerge.
Why Instagram Follower Count Does Not Tell the Full Creator Story
Consider Charlie Cameron.
He has 84,500 Instagram followers. His Reels average 183,800 plays.
Average Reel plays are more than double his follower count. That does not mean every Reel reaches a unique audience twice the size of his following, because plays are not the same as unique reach. It does show why follower count and content consumption should be read as different signals.
Discovery category signals add another layer. Cameron's strongest category is friends, family and relationships at 40.03%, followed closely by sport at 37.56%. Food, travel and cars also appear among his leading follower interests.
The commercial implication is straightforward: a partnership with Cameron does not have to behave like a traditional sports endorsement simply because he is an AFL player. The audience context surrounding his sporting identity is broader.
For brands, that distinction changes the question from "How many followers does this player have?" to "What does the available audience and performance data tell us about fit?"
Five AFL Player Instagram Patterns Brands Should Watch
Will Ashcroft: What His Instagram Audience Shows
Will Ashcroft has the largest following in this group: 106,000 followers, a 10.91% engagement rate and 93,900 average Reel plays.
Sport is clearly his strongest Discovery category, so there is no reason to pretend it is not central to the audience. What matters is what sits beside it. Shopping and retail is the second strongest category, followed closely by clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories.
His profile bio also reflects commercial breadth, referencing New Balance, Kayo Sports and Children's Ground.
The lesson is not that Ashcroft has become a fashion creator. It is that even a strongly sports-led audience contains other signals that can help brands assess relevance more precisely.
TL;DR: creator fit is rarely determined by a single category. Audience context helps explain where an athlete partnership may feel natural and where more evidence is needed.
Murphy Reid: When Reel Performance Outpaces Follower Count
Murphy Reid has 43,200 Instagram followers, but his social performance is already operating well beyond that account size. His current Discovery profile shows a 32.15% engagement rate and 153,900 average Reel plays, more than three times his follower count.
That makes Reid a useful example of why emerging creator profiles should not be assessed on scale alone. A smaller audience can still generate significant attention when the content is travelling strongly through social feeds.
His recent content also shows that this is not being driven by a single viral moment. Posts across football, personality and career milestones are consistently generating strong engagement relative to the size of the account.
For brands, Reid represents a different kind of creator opportunity: not established scale, but social momentum.
TL;DR: emerging creators can show strong partnership potential before follower count catches up. Content performance can be an early signal of where audience attention is building.
Zac Bailey: Why Reel Performance Matters Beyond Account Size
Zac Bailey has 36,500 followers and a 12.73% engagement rate. His Reels average 63,700 plays.
His audience is also highly Australian at 94.29%. Sport is the leading category, while family, cars, travel and fashion all appear among the top audience signals.
This combination is a useful reminder that follower count and distribution are not the same thing. Instagram's official creator guidance on Reels is built around discovery and helping Reels reach people beyond an account's existing audience. Bailey's profile shows why marketers should evaluate actual content performance alongside follower scale.
For a brand seeking an Australian audience, that geographic concentration is another piece of context. It does not make the account automatically more valuable, but it can make it more relevant to a specific brief.
TL;DR: scale, distribution and geographic relevance answer different questions. They should be assessed separately.
Shai Bolton: How Family and Lifestyle Shape His Instagram Audience
Shai Bolton has 56,100 followers, a 21.06% engagement rate and 81,200 average Reel plays. His audience is 93.23% Australian.
Discovery identifies friends, family and relationships as his strongest category signal at 39.90%, ahead of sport at 35.19%. Travel and food also feature prominently.
Football remains central to Bolton's public profile. The data simply shows that the social audience around that profile is not confined to sport.
TL;DR: athlete relevance can begin with sport while the content and audience context create additional partnership possibilities.
Alex Pearce: What Audience Interests Reveal Beyond AFL
Alex Pearce has 40,000 followers, a 10.60% engagement rate and an audience that is 90.04% Australian.
Friends, family and relationships is his strongest Discovery category signal at 40.75%, followed by sport at 36.12%. Travel and food are also prominent.
Viewed only through occupation, Pearce is an AFL player. Viewed through audience context, there is a broader mix of interests sitting around that identity.
TL;DR: job title, fame and follower count are useful inputs, but none of them fully describes creator fit on its own.
What Six AFL Instagram Audiences Tell Brands About Creator Fit
Across these profiles, there is no single model for what an AFL player’s Instagram audience looks like. Some skew toward family and lifestyle, others toward shopping, fashion or travel, while some generate content consumption well beyond their follower base.
That variation is what matters. Two players with similar sporting profiles can represent very different creator opportunities, which changes how a partnership should be planned, activated and measured.
Rather than treating the same athlete profile as the same opportunity, Fabulate Discovery gives marketers another layer of evidence across audience composition, performance, geography and category relevance.
For brands, the practical question is not who has the biggest name. It is which creator profile best fits the brief. Start with three things: what the audience engages with, how the content actually performs and which audience signals align with the brand.
Follower count is useful context, but it should sit alongside engagement rate, average video plays, geographic concentration, audience composition and category relevance.
That is the difference between fame as a starting point and evidence as a decision tool. The player creates the initial attention. Audience and performance data helps explain the opportunity around it.
